Few months ago, Microsoft added support for Double Tap To Wake to the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. Over the past several weeks, the company has been rolling the update out to Lumia 950 devices all around the world. And now, it seems like the company has also started releasing the feature for its Lumia 650. Some Lumia 650 owners have started reporting that Microsoft has released a new firmware update for the device, with brings support for Double Tap To Wake. Similar to most firmware updates, the new firmware update for the Lumia 650 isn’t available for all devices right now and Microsoft is rolling them out. Therefore, the update may not be available for your own Lumia 650 right now and it may take a while to arrive for your Lumia 650 as it depends on your region and carrier.

In a special report FastCompany has revealed that Microsoft Research scientists in Cambridge are working on cancer treatments in their newly installed wet lab with the aim of “solving” cancer in 10 years.
The report looks at the work in two areas in particular. One is Biological Modelling that involves using advanced computation to map the complex interactions at work inside a cell with the eventual goal is to make cells into living computers that could someday be programmed—and even reprogrammed—to treat diseases like cancer.
“The field of biology and the field of computation might seem like chalk and cheese,” says Chris Bishop, head of Microsoft Research’s Cambridge-based lab, “But the complex processes that happen in cells have some similarity to those that happen in a standard desktop computer.”

Microsoft has released a new update for the Outlook Mail land Calendar app to those on Windows 10. The update is currently available to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring, and it’ll likely arrive for everyone at a later date. The latest update for the Outlook Mail and Calendar app brings a few new features, this includes integration for the People app. With the latest update, you’ll be able to select contacts from the People app while sending an email which can be quite neat. The update also brings the ability to open up the People app from the Mail and Calendar app, just like the way you can open up the Calendar app from the Mail app.
Lastly, Microsoft has also introduced the ability to save all the attachments in an email at once with the latest update. Here’s the full changelog:

Microsoft is reportedly working on a new, cross-platform Skype client. The app, which is apparently codenamed “Skype for Life” will be available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. While there isn’t any concrete information on why the company is building a new client for Skype, but we suspect the company wants to provide a similar user experience across all platforms. Additionally, it is likely the company’s main focus for Skype for Life is to provide the same features across all of your devices. Currently, Microsoft has different apps for the Universal Windows Platform, Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, Web, and Linux — but the upcoming client reportedly aims to cross-platform. It is worth mentioning that this isn’t the only new app Microsoft is working on at the moment. As we recently reported, Microsoft is also working on its own Slack competitor called Skype Teams.

Former astronaut Buzz Aldrin yesterday launched the “Destination: Mars” exhibit at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
It is an interactive exhibit using the Microsoft HoloLens which will allow guests to “visit” several sites on Mars, reconstructed using thousands of real imagery from NASA’s Curiosity Mars Rover, which has been exploring the Red Planet since August 2012. Buzz Aldrin, an Apollo 11 astronaut who walked on the moon in 1969, will serve as “holographic tour guide” on the jouey. Curiosity Mars rover driver Erisa Hines will also appear holographically, leading participants to places on Mars where scientists have made exciting discoveries and explaining what we have leaed about the planet.
“This experience lets the public explore Mars in an entirely new way. To walk through the exact landscape that Curiosity is roving across puts its achievements and discoveries into beautiful context,” said Doug Ellison, visualization producer at JPL.

Microsoft, Gooogle, and Yahoo will begin to block ads and information about sex determination in their online search engines in India as a result of a supreme court judgment in India.
India has a history with sex determination in families, culminating in a ban on sex determination due to an alarming rate of female foeticides where families would attempt to have male children and deliberately abort female children in an attempt to carry out this objective.
As a result of this, India banned pre-birth sex determiantion in an attempt to curb the scourge, but a course case this year alleged that Microsoft,Yahoo, and Google were complicit in enabling providers of Sex determination services to reach users who wanted them by way of ads, as well as providing information about the practice online.

We saw some pictures earlier today comparing the performance of the Lumia 950 vs the iPhone 7 in day light, and both handsets performed quite well (with one of course half the price of the other).
Bright day light is however not the best measure of a smartphone camera, particularly when many pictures will be taken during evening entertainment, in restaurants, bars and concerts.
Thankfully Viktor, who sent us the first set of pictures, have now also set us a set taken in low light, and while the day light pictures were more or less equal, I believe the pictures taken in low light heavily favour the Lumia 950, with better detail and even colour reproduction.

The major selling point of this generation’s iPhone is further camera improvements, with which Apple hopes to regain the smartphone photo crown, lost to a number of other smartphones last year.
Lumia 950 owners will rightfully want to know if Apple managed to achieve this, and Viktor was able to do a direct comparison between the new iPhone 7 (not Pro) and the Lumia 950 in good day light conditions. iPhone 7 pictures were taken in auto mode with HDR off.
The iPhone 7 has a 12 megapixel f 1.8 camera with optical image stabilization. The Lumia 950 has a 20 megapixel f 1.9 camera also with optical image stabilization.

Last month we reported about a new Microsoft Garage app called HiveOut. HiveOut is now officially featured on Microsoft Garage website and anyone in India can now try it on an Android device. HiveOut is a group messaging app for Office 365 enabled schools and colleges. It offers a new way to manage information, track progress and make decisions. This app was built to help student mobile groups work more effectively together.

A few days ago we wrote about Microsoft expanding the ability of the HoloLens device by off-loading processing to a nearby PC.
Now the app which enables this, the Holographic Remoting Player, has popped up in the Windows Store.
The app description reads:
The Holographic Remoting Player is a companion app that connects to PC apps and games that support Holographic Remoting. Holographic Remoting streams holographic content from a PC to your Microsoft HoloLens in real-time, using a Wi-Fi connection.
The software lets the HoloLens export sensor data to a PC over WIFI, where all the processing can be done, and then import the resulting images back to the headset, enabling performance as good as 60 frames per second, and would allow more complex data to be overlayed on the image seen by the headset user.
Other new features enabled by the Remoting app is the ability to simulate inputs directly in Unity Play Mode which can be useful for developers, and also Unity Remote Debugging through microsoft news...

Late last month, we reported that Vaio’s Phone Biz was unable to receive the Windows 10 Anniversary Update due to issues revolving around continuum in the updated OS as the company stated in a support document.
Now, Vaio has released the update for users of their Vaio Phone Biz, due to language differences, we cannot confirm whether or not the bug that affects Continuum has been fixed or merely reduced, never the less, the update is now out. With this update, Microsoft adds a slightly revamped action center, improved Skype app with support for messaging everywhere coming soon, quick access to the camera on the lock screen and continuum improvements.
Windows Forest also claims the rollout has begun for the NuAns Neo, bringing them up both to the latest update released earlier this week.
If indeed the issues with Continuum were released to the Snapdragon 6xx chipset present in both devices, then it makes sense that Microsoft would withhold the update until a fix was ready to improve microsoft news...

With Windows Hello Microsoft has gone all-in on biometrics, but until very recently Windows 10 Mobile did not support fingerprint readers natively.
This does not mean Microsoft has not been thinking of the technology, and in a recently published patent they describe a fingerprint reader which can be an integral part of the screen of the device, taking up much less space and allowing for thinner smartphones.
The technology would use a wave guide undeeath the glass plus a filter which would allow a sensor on the side of the glass to sense the ridges of a fingerprint placed on the glass some distance away. The light from the wave guide may even be transmitted slightly further away via a fibre-optic cable, allowing more flexibility in the design of the handset. Microsoft notes the technology can be used both with LED and AMOLED screens.
Of course at present Microsoft is out of the smartphone manufacturing game, but if the mythical Surface Phone ever arrives we hope it features something microsoft news...
